DUNGLOE COTTAGE

This project involved a large extension to the existing thatched roof cottage situated on the shores of Dungloe Bay in Co. Donegal. The project brief also included the sensitive restoration and refurbishment of the existing “protected” structure. The conceptual design focussed on the blend of “old and new” architecture. A minimalist glass link reconfigured the main entrance to the building and formed the juxtaposition of the existing historic structure and the large contemporary extension elements to the design. The contemporary mono-pitch forms of the open plan kitchen/living/dining space and bedroom wing are heavily glazed and situated to take advantage of the stunning panoramic views across the bay. The traditional building techniques and materials used to restore the existing cottage contrast visually with the modern detailing and external materials of black zinc and charred accoya timber cladding of the extension elements which help enhance and reinforce the overall concept for the design of the building.
